Volunteer Coordinators: We need one (You can help sacLUG by
being the volunteer coordinator)
We need a volunteer coordinator who can update the time blocks
for volunteers. You would be responsible for updating the time slots for each installfest. If you
want to volunteer to help at a future installfest, read on!
Installfest volunteers register in one hour blocks. You can
register for more than one hour if you like. We have three different
categories of volunteers. We have the primary volunteer who is
the main contact person / decision maker. We have the secondary
volunteer who is the backup primary if the primary fails to show
up. Then we have assistants. If you want to read details about
the Installfest or see the directions to the installfest
location then check the main
page for the address. Installfests are on the Second Sunday
of the month.
Duties of the volunteers.
- Primary Volunteer
- Main Contact person / decision maker such that decisions
need to be made. Details you should know. This is a saclug installfest.
Members and non members are welcome to attend. Attendees bring
all their own equipment. saclug provides the main powerstrip,
tablespace, a chair, and the attendee brings every thing else.
You are obligated to help no one with their installation. Perform
and oversee opening or closing responsibilities if you are volunteering
during that time. http://www.saclug.org is the web page for saclug,
and it has details you ought to familiarize yourself with too.
-
- Secondary Volunteer
- If the Primary volunteer is gone, you are the primary volunteer.
- Backup contact person.
-
- Assistants
- Watch people struggle as they try to install Linux :). Ok,
you are invited to help them if you like. It's nice to see people
struggle on their own for a while, but it is good to help them
after they have pushed along, and just can't get it. This also
gives you the opportunity to persuade them to switch to a distribution
that you woul like more people use. So if you have a distro of
choice, and you would like to see more people use it, bring it
to the installfest. Last thing is, if someone doesn't want to
be helped, let them work on their own. I have never seen this
happen, but I thought I would throw it in.
The installfest is open to members and non members. If you
have any questions about the responsibilities, feel free to contact
Brian Lavender (brian@brie.com)
or the Volunteer Coordinator (Unfilled position). There are a
few items that the opening and closing person need to take care
of which are listed below. Wes Doak runs the room and if there
is any question about anything he is available by telephone. I
will post contact information for Wes once I dig it up.
Opening Person
- Let the person from the city know that you are there. The
installfest is in the Nevada City Room.
- Get the power cords. There are long power cords that plug
into three pronged outlets at the front of the room. Check with
Wes Doak the night before
the meeting and arrange for so that you can get those power strips.
His phone number is in the phonebook too. You will want to plug
the cord into the middle outlet, and extend it out into the room.
Extend it only as far as the tables are placed from the wall
end.
- Table(s). One table is usually in the room. If you are the
only person there, one table is usually enough until people start
arriving. You can get tables from the room across the hall. Use
the tables with the dark finish first. The white ones get marred
by the rubber feet on equipment. Place tables on each side of
the extended power strip.
- Chairs. Usually there are one or two chairs in the room.
If you need more grab them out of the hall. As people arrive
at the installfest. They can grab themselves a chair, so you
really only need a chair for yourself and maybe one other.
- Ethernet jacks. There are about twenty or so ethernet jacks
at the front of the room. These are dhcp jacks. Attendees plug
in their machine, configure a dhcp client, and off they go. DHCP
will automatically grab everthing needed. It even grabbed the
dns for me.
- Ethernet cables. Wes has some long ethernet cords in the
closet. If you have coordinated with him, we can use several
of those cables. We usually only use about five of the long ones.
If attendence rises, we can use more. Write on the chalk board
how many you obtained. That way the closing person will know
how many to put away.
Closing Person
- The city person can answer general questions you may have.
You can also call Wes Doak if you have questions. Or you can
contact Brian Lavender too.
- Return Power strip to main office where Wes Doak can later
retrieve it. The city contact person will show you this location.
- Return any ethernet cables to the main office too. On the
chalk board is listed the number of ethernet cables borrowed.
- Return table(s) and chairs that may have been borrowed from
other areas. The opening person is instructed to take the tables
out of the room across the hall, so if it looks like a few tables
are missing from there, that is where to return them.
- Notify city person you are leaving. 5pm is closing time.
Let everyone know fifteen minutes ahead of time.
