LUGS is now a part of the Sacramento
PC Users Group. (http://www.sacpcug.org)
Meeting Information
Regular meetings set for the second wednesday of the month.
Upcoming Events:
- Wednesday, June 9, 1999 - CGI with PERL (Brian Lavender)
CGI with C (Bill Kendrick)
- 7 pm - 7:30pm
- Open question forum
- 7:30pm - 9pm
- It's the face off between C and PERL. Brian Lavender (me)
and Bill Kendrick go head to head battling it out over which
language is most effective for CGI. Ok, ok, it's not that. Bill
uses C, I use PERL. Bill runs three popular web sites. Two of
which I can name here: Bill's
Games and New
Breed Software. He is a purist whose talnet brings marvel
to CGI developers' eyes. Bill continuously cranks out code, and
it seems that each time I see him, he has a new innovation he
is working on. I on the other hand am Just Another PERL Hacker.
I create the cgi programming for brie.com.
My eight to five job is at the Army
Corps of Engineers where I try to get in as much PERL hacking
as I can.
- Saturday, June 12, 1999 - Install Fest (Our first one.
Directions. NOT
at Calweb)
10 am - 4 pm
- Larry Dilley has volunteered space at his employer's company
for us to host our first ever install fest. We get together
and help each other install Linux. It is BYOS. That means Bring
Your Own Stuff! That means bring your monitor too. Your reaction,
"It weighs fifty pounds!" Sorry dude, I haul mine around,
you can too. Make sure you bring your own Linux distribution,
power strip, floppy disks, keyboard, mouse, and if you bring
a hub you will be given preferential treatment to network connectivity.
We will have a few extra copies of Linux Distributions, but you
are best to find one before the meeting. Check cheapbytes.
Larry also has bandwidth available for downloading. Even though
we will help you with creating a dual boot system, chance that
you use another OS, we will not be responsible for any data
loss. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Mailing List implemented.
LUGS (Sacramento) now has a mailing list. Last meeting I announced
the list would be hosted at brie.com, but since Mike Machado offered
his expertise, I decided to take him up on his offer. Lug-nuts
at brie.com is online, but I plan on transferring the names to
Mikes list which he hosts at Majordomo@cheapnet.net. Until the
next meeting we will run the lists in parallel. Join and find
out the latest with LUGS. To subscribe send a message to Majordomo@cheapnet.net
with a blank subject line and in the body place:
To: Majordomo@cheapnet.net
Subject: <blank>

Basic Linux Info
You are invited to the Linux Users Group Sacramento (LUGS)
meeting. Linux is a UNIX type operating system. Among the heavyweights,
Linux has been adopted by Wells Fargo Bank, NASA, Cisco, PG&E,
and the United States Post Office for production applications.
Linus Torvalds began the original creation of Linux in 1991 which
is now supported by thousands of developers around the world.
The source to Linux is open, so it allows for complete customization.
Come to the meeting to learn more, or share your current knowledge.

Volunteers needed.
Now that more people come to the meetings, we need volunteers.
You can make LUGS more like the way you want it by becoming a
volunteer. We could use volunteers in the following areas:
- Speakers (Got something you would like to show off at a LUGS
meeting. We are all ears.)
- Someone who can supply a PA system.
- Door prize procurer.
- Door prize donations. Got a copy of a distribution you want
to give away? bring it to the meeting
