I don't know what PacBell is calling an external "modem". I *assume* it's a
box that will plug into an ethernet port (on a machine or on a switch).

You don't HAVE TO push all the traffic through one box, you certainly can
have five machines on a switch with each of the five IP addresses. That way
the Bad Guys can have five machines to mess with instead of just bouncing
off a firewall ;).
