best way to migrate to XFree86 3.3.3.1 with Debian

I have Debian 2.1 installed. It comes with XFree86 3.3.2 which does
not work with my video card. I was thinking I could just jump to
potato which has 3.3.3.1, but I will end up moving to glibc 2.1 which
has problems with other software I have. If I download the source and
I compile it myself, how can I tell dselect I already have it
installed?

Any other suggestions on this?
