I prefer WindowMaker. It is the most productive for my uses and is
fairly robust. If you are new to Linux then I suggest KDE as it looks
and works like win95 (more or less).

Once you feel confident I suggest trying out different WindowManagers.
The recent versions of RedHat & Debian let you switch window managers
easily on the fly. I would do a "kitchen sink" install of almost all the
X11 software and experiment .
