Installfest Location needed

We don't have a regular location for installfests. If you can arrange a location, let me know. Basically we need a place with tables, and power.

Meeting Information

Regular meetings set for the second wednesday of the month at Calweb, 7-9pm. Map and Directions available.
Upcoming Events:

Wednesday, August 11, 1999 - Various Distributions Demoed
Location: Calweb
7pm - 9pm
Various members have volunteered to demonstrate the various Linux distributions. I figured this would give us a chance to step back and cater to the beginning users in the group. We will have individual tables with a distribution at each table. Rather than have speakers lecture to the entire group, small groups will gather around each table. We will rotate every fifteen minutes. At each table I hope to have the demonstrators give a brief explanation about the distribution he is showing, and talk about some feature he likes about the distribution. The demonstrators are all working on a volunteer basis. I have several people who said they would volunteer to do this, but I don't have any of their names written down. If you are one of these people, let me know so I can put you down on a list.

Wednesday, August 18, 1999 - Question and Answer Table
Location: Sacramento Association of Realtors
7pm - 9pm
I will host a question and answer table at the regular Sacramento PC Users Group meeting. SPCUG is the parent organization for the Linux Users Group of Sacramento (LUGS). Hopefully, all the attendees at the the LUGS meetings plan on becoming SPCUG members since they do support us. If you would like to paricipate in the Q&A table, either show up, or let me know and show up. You can then preach your distribution of choice to newbies looking for direction. If I have my way, everyone will be a Debian and Slackware expert. :)

Wednesday, September 8, 1999 - X Windows Demo
Location: Calweb
7pm - 9pm
Heather Stern who is a member of SVLUG and runs starshine consulting services has volunteered to give her X Windows demonstration. I am still working on the details (transportation and lodging), so this has not been confirmed.

Saturday, September 18, 1999 - Installfest / PC Jamboree
Location:
Access Media School
4623 T Street
Sacramento, CA
12pm - 4pm
The September Installfest will be a part of the Sacramento PC User Group's PC Jamboree. We have tables, chairs, and a reported T1 line. Beth Camero was instrumental in organizing the Installfest portion of the Jamoree. I created a web page showing volunteers for the Installfest. If you are interested in volunteering, let me know and I will put you on the list.

Papers

Mailing List implemented.

LUGS (Sacramento) now has a mailing list. Last meeting I announced the list would be hosted at brie.com, but since Mike Machado offered his expertise, I decided to take him up on his offer. Lug-nuts at brie.com is online, but I plan on transferring the names to Mikes list which he hosts at Majordomo@cheapnet.net. Until the next meeting we will run the lists in parallel. Join and find out the latest with LUGS. To subscribe send a message to Majordomo@cheapnet.net with a blank subject line and in the body place:

To: Majordomo@cheapnet.net
Subject: <blank>

Upcoming Events

Mike Machado informed me about the upcoming Linux Demo day. From what I understand it is a week where LUGs around the world are encouraged to find outlets for demonstrating Linux. It sounds cool, but we need a chairperson to lead the organization of the event. If you are interested in heading up a demo day, let me know and I will replace this blurb with a link to your page. On a second note, we also have the monthly SPCUG meetings where we probably ought to have a linux box set up. I have been thinking about taking my linux box out to the last two meetings. With another volunteer, I would definitely be up to it.

Basic Linux Info

You are invited to the Linux Users Group Sacramento (LUGS) meeting. Linux is a UNIX type operating system. Among the heavyweights, Linux has been adopted by Wells Fargo Bank, NASA, Cisco, PG&E, and the United States Post Office for production applications. Linus Torvalds began the original creation of Linux in 1991 which is now supported by thousands of developers around the world. The source to Linux is open, so it allows for complete customization. Come to the meeting to learn more, or share your current knowledge.

Become a member

LUGS is a special interest group of the Sacramento PC Users Group. They provide us with liability insurance, non profit status, a monthly publication which we can submit reports to, along with the status of being part of a recoginized organization. I would like to encourage everyone to sign up and become a member. You will help support the group that supports our SIG. Dues are $35 per year. If you would like a membership application, please email me and I will mail you one. You don't have to be a member of SACPCUG to come to the meetings, but by being one, you will help support the continued progress of LUGS.
